Rheumatology and Arthrosis Unit

The Arthroscopic Surgery Unit has a Rheumatology and Arthrosis Unit comprising a multi-discipline team of specialists in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and arthrosis.

Arthrosis is a disease which causes deterioration of the articular cartilage and generally occurs in the main joints. This and other degenerative joint diseases mean a huge demand for primary healthcare and specialist services and total almost a quarter of total medical consultations. Within the Arthroscopic Surgery Unit they make up as many as 50% of consultations. The aim of the treatment is to deal with the disease from the initial stages through to the final stages, focusing mainly on prevention as the core issue. For this reason, it is crucial to establish an integral treatment protocol which, based on biological therapy involving PRGF®-Endoret® platelet rich plasma, incorporates physical exercise, physiotherapy and health education in an aim to focus on prevention in order to encourage self-care and to favour a healthy lifestyle.

The UCA is a pioneer in the biological treatment  of arthrotic injuries using Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF®-Endoret®) Technology. Injections of PRGF reduce the chemical substances which cause inflammation of the synovial fluid of patients suffering from osteoarthritis. The results are not immediate and take several weeks to take effect. The pain is alleviated and as a result, patients are enabled to go back to doing the activities they enjoy.
