What is it?
Lower back pain, also known as lumbago, is pain that occurs in the lower back region. This pain can stem from various structures, such as the intervertebral discs, facet joints, sacroiliac joints, muscles, ligaments, or lumbar nerves. The most common causes of lower back pain are muscle or ligament injuries, herniated discs, facet joint osteoarthritis, and poor posture. Occupational factors, such as lifting heavy objects and repetitive movements, along with psychosocial factors like stress and anxiety, also play a role. Additionally, having a genetic predisposition to musculoskeletal problems can increase the risk of lower back pain.
Symptoms
Lower back pain often radiates to the legs or buttocks. The intensity of the pain can range from mild to disabling, and tends to worsen with certain movements or when sitting or standing for long periods.
