UCA Clinical Case: Knee giant cell tumour

Patient:

  • A 37-year-old woman presents pain and limited mobility in her right knee that has persisted for years.
  • In addition, there is a large palpable lump in the popliteal fossa.

Complementary studies carried out by ultrasound and MRI reveal the presence of synovitis and intra-articular masses affecting the whole joint in general, as well as a tumour in the posterior region of the knee involving the popliteal vessel/nervous bundle.

Surgical treatment is performed to take the intra-articular masses out by arthroscopic surgery. The extra-articular component of the tumour is removed by open surgery.
