Many times, physiotherapy is perceived as an element that serves to recover from injuries and ailments that we already suffer from, when it actually allows us to carry out specific preventive work to prevent possible injuries, whether on a day-to-day basis or in professional or amateur sportsmen and women.
It is very important to carry out a totally individualized planning adapted to the objectives of each person. The preventive work of physiotherapy consists of evaluating, improving and working on physical conditions, especially analysing postural adaptations acquired over time, such as muscular imbalances and/or loss of mobility, for thus avoid future injuries through load correction during physical activity and the performance of everyday activities.
When a patient comes to the Advanced Physiotherapy Unit (UFA, according to the Spanish acronym), we carry out a functional assessment to observe and describe the different adaptations acquired over time. We observe their standing posture and ask them to perform different gestures to identify possible weaknesses and muscle shortening.
To do this, we also make use of the latest technologies. At the UFA, we have different assessment instruments, such as the isokinetic machine, thanks to which we can obtain objective results of muscle strength from different parts of the body. We use the Alter-G antigravity treadmill to analyse the patient's gait and running by removing up to 80% of their bodyweight. This is also a great help to describe the adaptations caused by the existing muscle imbalance.
It is a completely detailed analysis and physiotherapy work to prepare our patients for their daily life and their sporting challenges, with the objective of preventing and minimising the risk of injury.
