UCA Clinical Case: Haglund's deformity in a professional athlete and Jayson Granger´s recovery

We deal with the clinical case of a 30-year-old patient, who recently left professional sport after a career as a pelota player and who presents symptoms compatibles with the "Haglund's deformity".

The Haglund's deformity is a space conflict of the Achilles tendon at its insertion into the calcaneus. Its origin is a bone deformity on the calcaneus that leads to tendon impingement. As a consequence of this impingement a tendinous inflammatory process that generates pain is established. Moreover, this impingement can lead to tendon degeneration.

After leaving his professional career, the patient has pain and limitation when performing any kind of leisure sport activity. After additional X-ray and MRI studies, a calcaneal deformity compatible with Haglund's deformity was found, with tendon damage in the distal Achilles tendon and retrocalcaneal bursitis.

Surgical treatment is performed to solve this problem. The surgical technique consists of decompressing the bony prominence in the calcaneus by resection, which eliminates the conflict with the tendon. Likewise, biological therapies (PRGF) are injected into the tendon in order to accelerate its recovery.

"Volver", a documentary about basketball player Jayson Granger's recovery at the Arthroscopic Surgery Unit of Dr. Mikel Sánchez (UCA, according to the Spanish acronym)

DAZN has launched the documentary "Volver", which gathers up the diagnosis, surgery and recovery processes of the basketball player Jayson Granger, all of them having been carried out by the teams of the UCA and the Advanced Physiotherapy Unit (UFA, according to the Spanish acronym). A very similar clinical case to the one reviewed above.

It was a pleasure to participate in this great documentary that you can now enjoy on DAZN.
