Collaboration between the UFA and Alba Berlin basketball team to find out the impact that high competition has on the players´ muscular balance

In the Advanced Physiotherapy Unit (UFA, according to the Spanish acronym) of the UCA we are involved in a project aimed at preventing injuries in professional sport. To do this, we are developing our work using the Biodex System 3 dynamometer in collaboration with Dr. Patrick Middleton (rehabilitation specialist, international reference in sports medicine specialised in the rehab of elite athletes and close collaborator of the UCA) and Néstor Pérez Mallada (associate professor at the San Juan de Dios School of Nursing and Physiotherapy at the Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid).

We are able to obtain useful results by performing force measurements with this system to thus assess the musculature of professional sportsmen and women. The studies carried out during the 2019 season on one of the teams belonging to the EuroLeague allowed us to evaluate the changes the musculature of the athletes experiences. Furthermore, we were able to notice if these indicators could show injury risk throughout the season with a very high forecasting ability.

This new season, we have begun collaboration with ALBA Berlin, an elite European basketball team and participant in the EuroLeague, with the Contrx - MJ system, carrying out a work similar to the one described above. Relevant conclusions can be drawn for injury prevention, performance improvement and muscle fatigue, once the impact of high competition on players' muscle balance is known. With this valuable information, the coaching staff, physical trainers, doctors and physiotherapists of the club can programme the physical planning and rest days in a personalised way for each player. This can facilitate the planning of training sessions focused on balance, stability and proprioceptive control, thus improving the ability to prevent injuries. This work will always be an additional contribution to the work carried out by the medical services and trainers of the club. We hope to help improve the performance of the players thanks to this work.
